There is so much about hymns to love. First, I love their deep theology. Okay, I’ll be the first to admit that a few hymns have shallow or even bad theology, but most of the hymns that have survived the test of time are deeply theological. Second, I love their musicality. Most hymns are more singable and more musically enjoyable than the fare that gets served under the rubric of “praise and worship”. There are so many more reasons to love hymns, but love them, I do, and I enjoy praising God with my voice through hymns.

I agree wholeheartedly, on both counts. This morning I preached from the book of Ruth, on what it meant for Boaz to be Ruth’s kinsman-redeemer. Then, I drew a parallel to Christ. We ended the service by singing Philip Bliss’s “My Redeemer” (“I will sing of my Redeemer, and His wondrous love to me…”) A “lowly” gospel song, to be sure, and not a true hymn in the technical sense. But it moved me to tears, and brought a number of hearty “amens!” afterward. It saddens me when the richness of our hymnody is ignored by some worship leaders caught in the trap of “We must be contemporary”!
